Generating electricity is not the same as delivering it. This sector makes the transformers, switchgear and high-voltage equipment that connect power plants to the places consuming power — and builds the lines themselves.
It has become a genuine chokepoint. Lead times for large transformers stretch well beyond a year, and the manufacturing base was sized for a slower-growing grid. That mismatch, not generation capacity, is often what delays a project.
What moves it: utility capital plans, transformer lead times, interconnection queues and grid-hardening programmes.

They are built to order, take a long time to make, and the manufacturing base was scaled for steadier demand. Demand rose faster than capacity could be added.
The waiting list to connect a new generator or large load to the grid. Studies and upgrades take time, and queue position can determine when a project can actually energise.
A data center cannot open without a grid connection sized for its load. Transmission constraints have become one of the more binding limits on how quickly capacity comes online.
