What this sector actually does

Before any of this runs, someone pours the concrete, pulls the conduit and installs the mechanical systems. This sector is the engineering and construction firms doing that work.

It is the most physical, least abstract part of the map, and its constraints are correspondingly stubborn: skilled labour, permitting, and equipment lead times. Backlogs here are a reasonably honest measure of what is actually being built rather than announced.

What moves it: backlog growth, project awards, labour availability, and permitting timelines.

Common questions

Why watch construction backlogs?

A backlog is contracted work not yet performed. It is a more concrete signal than press-released intentions, because someone has committed to pay for it.

What actually limits data-center construction?

Usually power availability and skilled trades rather than money or land. A site without a grid connection cannot open regardless of how quickly the shell goes up.

Are these companies dependent on AI?

Most serve broader infrastructure markets too. Data centers have become a larger share of the mix, but the underlying businesses predate the AI build-out.
