The ETF X-ray

What’s actually inside an “AI ETF”?

Every AI ETF claims the same theme. Their holdings and their returns tell different stories. We rank them all on real performance — and measure how much of each fund is genuinely AI infrastructure.

48 funds · ranked by 1-year total return · prices as of close, Sep 18, 2026 · 17 of 48 publish enough holdings for an AI-infra share.
The latest closing price, and how far it moved from the previous close.Total return since the first trading day of this calendar year — not a full twelve months.Total return over the whole three years added together, not an annual average. A 3Y of 200% is not 200% a year.Total return over the whole five years added together, not an annual average. The annual percentage the fund charges to run it, deducted automatically from the fund rather than billed to you.The share of the fund’s disclosed holdings that maps to one of our AI sub-sectors. Shown only where those holdings cover enough of the fund to mean anything — “n/a” means not enough is published, never zero.

Sorted by 1 year, highest first. Click any column to re-sort. Returns are total returns including distributions; 3Y and 5Y are cumulative, not annualised. Past performance does not guarantee future results. “AI-infra” is the share of the fund mapping to our AI sub-sectors, shown only where disclosed holdings cover at least 55% of the fund — “n/a” means not enough holdings are published to say, not zero.

How this board is built

Performance

Total returns computed from daily closing prices with distributions reinvested, over trailing windows ending at the close of Sep 18, 2026. Funds younger than a window show “—” for it rather than a figure measured from inception, which would flatter them.

AI-infra share

Each fund’s disclosed top holdings are mapped onto our AI sub-sectors and the matching weights summed. It is shown only where those holdings cover at least 55% of the fund — otherwise the number would describe a sliver of the portfolio while looking like it described all of it.

What is not here

No composite score and no ranking of our own devising. There are no leveraged or inverse funds either: a 3× product’s five-year return is not comparable to an unlevered one, and putting both in a sortable column invites exactly that comparison.

Source & refresh

Fund facts, prices and holdings from Yahoo Finance via yfinance, captured 2026-09-18. Figures are a snapshot of that date, not live quotes. Holdings disclosure varies by issuer, which is why coverage differs so widely between funds.

Past performance does not guarantee future results. Informational and educational only — nothing here is financial advice or a recommendation to buy or sell any security.

About AI ETFs

Why do two AI ETFs hold completely different things?

Because "AI" is a theme, not a defined industry classification. Each issuer writes its own inclusion rules, so one fund can be mostly chipmakers while another is mostly industrial robotics. Comparing the label tells you nothing; comparing the holdings tells you everything.

What does the AI-infra share actually measure?

The share of a fund’s published holdings that maps to one of our AI infrastructure sub-sectors — chips, memory, networking, power, data centres and the rest. It is computed from the fund’s disclosed top holdings, not estimated, and it is only shown when those holdings cover enough of the fund to be meaningful.

Why do some funds show "n/a" instead of a share?

Because their published top holdings cover too little of the fund to support a number. An equal-weighted fund of 300 names may disclose ten positions worth 15% of assets; computing a share from that would look precise and tell you nothing about the other 85%. We would rather show a gap than a figure we cannot stand behind.

Are these returns price returns or total returns?

Total returns — distributions are reinvested. That is the only basis on which funds with different payout policies can be compared. The 3-year and 5-year figures are cumulative over the whole period, not annualised.

Is any of this a recommendation?

No. Every column is a published fact or an arithmetic result from one, and the board is sorted by whichever column you pick. There is no composite score, no rating, and no view on which fund anyone should own.

What is an expense ratio?

The annual percentage of your investment the fund charges to run it, deducted automatically. On otherwise similar funds it is one of the few differences known in advance.
