The business is a leveraged bet on fab construction rather than on chip demand directly. Equipment orders are placed well before the chips they make ever ship, so this sector moves on capacity plans rather than current sales.

Wafer fab equipment — the collective term for the tools inside a chip factory. Industry-wide WFE spending is the headline number this sector trades on.
It is the step that defines the smallest feature a process can print, and the most advanced lithography systems come from a single supplier. That makes it the narrowest point in the entire chain.
Equipment is the most controllable chokepoint in chipmaking, so it is where trade restrictions concentrate. Rule changes can redirect a meaningful share of a supplier's addressable market.
