What this sector actually does

Someone has to bolt accelerators, memory, networking and cooling into a finished rack and deliver it. That is this sector — system builders and the contract manufacturers behind them.

Margins are thin because the expensive content belongs to someone else, so revenue can grow dramatically while profit grows modestly. The trade-off is visibility: these firms see order books early, which makes their commentary a useful read on demand.

What moves it: order backlogs, customer concentration, and the mix between complete systems and components.

Common questions

Why are server margins so thin?

Most of a rack's value is in accelerators and memory bought from others. The assembler adds integration, testing and logistics — real work, but a small slice of the total price.

What is an ODM?

An original design manufacturer — a firm that designs and builds hardware sold under a customer's brand. Large buyers often work with ODMs directly.

Why does liquid cooling come up here?

Dense AI racks generate more heat than air can practically remove, so cooling is increasingly designed into the system rather than added to the room.
