What this sector actually does

Training a large model needs thousands of accelerators behaving as one machine. Networking is what makes that possible — the switches, links and protocols that move data between chips fast enough that they are not left waiting.

As clusters grow, the share of total cost sitting in networking rises. Interconnect performance increasingly determines how large a usable cluster can be, which is why this sector tracks accelerator deployments closely.

What moves it: cluster build-outs, port-speed transitions, and competition between networking standards.

Common questions

Why does networking matter so much for AI?

A training run splits work across many accelerators that must constantly exchange results. If the network is slower than the chips, expensive processors sit idle waiting on data.

What is a retimer?

A component that cleans up and regenerates a high-speed signal so it can travel further without errors. As data rates rise, signals degrade over shorter distances and more of these are needed.

How is this different from optical and photonics?

Networking covers the switching and protocol layer; optical covers the physical light-based transmission between racks. They are adjacent layers of the same problem.
