What this sector actually does

Above the hardware sits the software layer AI applications are actually built on: databases, data pipelines, monitoring and orchestration. It is the plumbing that makes accelerators useful to a business.

The revenue model differs from hardware. These are largely subscription businesses with usage-based components, so growth compounds more steadily but is also more exposed to customers optimising their spending.

What moves it: consumption growth, net retention, and how much AI workloads add to existing usage.

Common questions

Why is this counted as AI infrastructure?

Models need data prepared, stored, served and monitored. Without that layer, accelerators have nothing useful to run against.

What is net revenue retention?

A measure of whether existing customers spend more or less over time, after churn. Above 100% means the existing base is growing on its own.

How is this different from AI applications?

This sector sells the underlying platform other companies build on, rather than a finished end-user product.
